Tragedy that looms over the Sambhar Region :
Being deprived of a necessity as basic as water has loomed over the arid regions of our country like Rajasthan. If that catastrophic condition is coupled with whatever water left being so toxic that it causes people to miserably suffer with disabilities and health problems and for some to die, it is not different to a plague.
Scrolling through the news on my phone, I came across an article about a flock of birds found dead near the Sambhar Lake because of the excessive toxicity of the water.
As I read about the toxicity of water in all of the Sambhar belt, I couldn’t help but notice how the population of the Sambhar belt is suffering from the adverse effects of toxic water tenfold. 3 children have lost their lives just because of toxic water intake, the elderly suffer from physical disabilities, and numerous hamlets fail to sustain a stable livelihood.
I knew I had to contribute to make their lives better in any way I could, living a mere 30 kilometres from the village. With that goal in mind, I partnered with a local NGO – Gram Chetna Kendra to get a sustainable solution to water scarcity and toxicity in the region.
And today, Aakash Ganga is a voice for the voiceless concerns of the people in the Sambhar belt. We aim to bring freshwater to them through air water generators, which harness water vapour out of the air and convert it to liquid water. Additionally, in order to make this process sustainable, we aim to power these generators with solar panels. That is why the people of the Sambhar belt need your contribution, to save their lives. To make their voices heard, to make their needs matter, and most importantly, to make their future matter. Save a life everyday through your donation. Help this population get access to one of the most basic necessities to live a healthy life, clean drinking water.

- Sudon Ka Bas: This region has a 4.9 mg/l fluoride level, 49mg/l nitrate level and 601 mg/l salinity level
- Bhainslana: This region has a 7.4 mg/l fluoride level, 149 mg/l nitrate level and a 601 mg/l salinity level
- Itawa: This region has a 13.27 mg/l fluoride level, 78 mg/l nitrate level and a 601 mg/l salinity level
- Jhalara: This region has a 20 mg/l fluoride level, 65 mg/l nitrate level and 500 mg/l salinity level
Water Toxicity in Sambhar Belt Regions
Disabilities And Health Problems
Water toxicity in the region leads to people experiencing disabilities and health problems as follows:
- Children especially struggle with deformed limbs, stunted growth and joint pains.
- There are common cases of widening of bones, nerve compression and weakening limbs.
- People experience slurred speech and body pain.
- Along with bone deformities, people suffer from chest inflation.
- Some rare symptoms observed are nausea and abdominal pain.
- It can also lead to long-term impacts like nervousness and depression.
- Similarly, peoples’ muscle strength, tendons and kidneys are affected as well.
What one might think the ideal solution would be
If the problem is toxic water with high fluoride, nitrate, salinity etc. why not install water purifiers and RO’s? Here’s why:
- One major problem with RO’s is that 60 percent of the water that it purifies is wasted in the cleaning process and when the region is dirt poor and is diabolically deprived of water, it explicitly does not have any water to waste.
- When water purifiers or RO’s are installed, a softener is needed to soften the hardwater before it is purified. Although, because the water is so hard and toxic, the softener has already stopped working there.
- The government has limited pipelines of water in the area and the pipelines they do have fail to provide water regularly.
- Based on this, I have come to a consensus that the already tried and tested options such as water purifiers have failed to provide a solution to scarcity or water toxicity
The Real Solution : Air Water Generators
- Upon pondering over this problem, I decided to take a closer look at it. My parents and I took a trip to see the atmospheric conditions and the lives of the people in the Sambhar Belt.
- Households have around 6-7 children and out of every 13 children, 8 suffer from disabilities linked to drinking toxic water. 3 children in the village have died due to water toxicity.
- Whatever method of providing freshwater such as rainwater harvesting, wells, aquifers etc. they have tried have not been successful.
- After researching solutions to this problem for a while, I came across a company that manufactures air water generators for regions which have water scarcity.
- This would be the ideal solution to the Sambhar region’s problems as it would cure the water scarcity and toxicity in the area.
How do Air Water Generators work?
The sun powers fans that pull pure water vapor out of the air.
Warm air inside the panel turns water vapor into liquid water.
The pure water is mineralized for health and taste.
The self-contained system circulates the water and keeps it clean.
Water can be plumbed directly into your home for easy enjoyment.
Collaboration with Gram Chetna Kendra
Gram Chetna Kendra (GCK) engenders unrelenting efforts for a catalytic initiation of people-based developments to ensure equal opportunities and minimum essentials for a quality life to be led by rural masses.
Some of their most prominent achievements include the reduction of malnutrition and the improvement of healthcare services, improving infrastructure and reducing the dropout rate in schools and helping 81% of women in the Sambhar belt to be employed in companies or start their own businesses.
According to the head of GCK, Mr. Om Prakash Sharma, the NGO has been successful in acquiring the Japanese Embassy to fund several projects of theirs.
Benefits of Air Water Generators as a source of water
Nanotechnology
The Generators are incorporated with nanotechnology like bio-mimetic, nano-engineered, micro-nano structure patterned surfaces to make evaporators and condensers.
Purification
Based on air quality and contaminants it is ensured that the undesirable chemicals, biological matter, suspended solids, and harmful gases are removed from the water with the help of modular water purifier cartridges.
Mineralization
Re-mineralization cartridges add human body essential minerals (Ca, Mg, K, Na, Se, Zn, Fe, Cu, Co, V, and Mo) to generate water in a sustainable and controlled manner.
Efficiencies
Clubbing energy efficiency with renewable energy will give them the much-needed window to incubate the renewable energy sector without having to increase the cost of electricity.
Why you should be assured of your investment
After your investment in the installation of the hydro panels, you will have the availability of tracking your donation and its use. This can take place as follows:
- You will have the contact information of the community in charges employed by the Gram Chetna Kendra
- Monthly visits will be made to the sites where the panels are installed by the in charges
- They would monitor the water availability to everyone in the community and the quality of water there and create a record
- You can contact them at any time and ask for those monthly reports
- You can connect with them to inquire about where the amount you donated is being used. For instance, it can be used for maintenance, restoration or transportation of water from the hydro panel to those areas where the hydro panels are not in the vicinity
